In the summer of 2014, I interned at a Korean newspaper called the Hankyoreh, translating articles from Korean to English for the newspaper's online English edition. Below are links to the articles I translated... I have to say I was inordinately excited to see "Translated by Noh Ga-ram, Hankyoreh English intern" at the bottom of my first article, which as about dolphins off the coast of Jeju island. Overall, the internship was an opportunity for me to learn more not only about the language of Korean, but also about the language of English. It's interesting how one language can often illuminate truths about another that would otherwise be obscure. Translating was not without its challenges, but it was a chance for both cultural and linguistic discovery. This summer seems to have been one of rediscovery-- of a language and country that in some ways I seem to have shunned growing up, and of a language that I had in some ways always taken for granted.
